Minecraft Is for Free? What You Can Play Without Paying

Find out when Minecraft is free, which devices offer trials, and what the full game costs.

Minecraft is for free only in limited cases: you can use an official trial, play the old browser version Minecraft Classic, or claim an eligible upgrade such as PS4 to PS5. The complete modern game is normally paid. Free trials limit time, modes, or multiplayer, and unofficial downloads are unsafe and illegal.

Is Minecraft free?

The full version of Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is not permanently free. You normally purchase the edition for your device, then sign in with a Microsoft account to play. On Windows PC, buying Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition gives you both PC editions through the unified launcher, but it does not unlock the console or mobile versions.

You can still play Minecraft without paying in a few legitimate ways:

  • Use the official free trial available for supported devices and regions.
  • Play Minecraft Classic, an old browser version with only 32 blocks and limited features.
  • Use a copy you already own on another supported platform when the platform provides an eligible entitlement or upgrade.
  • Join someone else’s Realm or multiplayer world after the host pays for the game and service, although you still need your own compatible copy in most cases.

A free Microsoft account is not the same as a free Minecraft license. The account lets you sign in, save purchases, and connect across devices, but it does not provide the full game by itself.

How to get Minecraft for free legally

The safest way to try the modern game is through Minecraft’s official free-trial page or the store for your device. Availability depends on your platform and region, so a trial shown to one player may not appear for another. The standard trial is restricted to single-player Survival, with commands, multiplayer, and Realms unavailable. On PC, the trial is about 90 minutes, or roughly four and a half in-game days; Java Edition trials are commonly around five in-game days or 100 minutes, depending on the device. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/free-trial?utm_source=openai))

  1. Open the official Minecraft launcher or your platform’s app store.
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account or create one for free.
  3. Select the Minecraft trial or demo option if it is available.
  4. Install the game and start the trial.
  5. Buy the full edition if you want unlimited worlds, normal multiplayer, commands, and Realms.

Avoid websites offering cracked launchers, “free premium accounts,” or modified APK files. They can contain malware, steal your Microsoft account, or expose your worlds and personal information. They also do not provide a legitimate license.

Is Minecraft free on PC, Mac, and Linux?

Windows PC

Windows 10 and Windows 11 support Minecraft Bedrock Edition and Java Edition through the official launcher. You can try the available demo without buying the game, but the full editions require a purchase. Java Edition supports Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock on PC is the Windows version.

Mac

Minecraft is not permanently free on Mac. The official Java Edition trial works on Mac, and the full Java Edition can be purchased for the platform. Bedrock Edition is not the standard native Mac version, so downloading a random Bedrock installer from another website is not a legitimate workaround. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/free-trial?utm_source=openai))

Chromebook

Minecraft Bedrock Edition is officially available on compatible Chromebooks through Google Play, but it is normally a paid app. Owning Minecraft for Android may qualify you for a discounted Chromebook purchase, but it does not mean every Chromebook receives the game for free. Check that your Chromebook meets the compatibility requirements before purchasing.

A Chromebook may also let you install Android apps, but that does not guarantee Minecraft will run correctly. If the Play Store does not list the official app for your device, do not use a sideloaded copy as a substitute.

Is Minecraft free on mobile?

Minecraft on Android and iOS is normally a paid mobile app. You may find an official trial or promotional access through the relevant app store, but there is no permanent full version that everyone can download for free. The official trial page lists Android among supported Bedrock trial platforms; availability can vary by region and store account. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/free-trial?utm_source=openai))

Android phones and tablets

Search for the official Minecraft app in Google Play and check the publisher before installing. If a trial is offered, it will appear through the official listing or Minecraft’s trial instructions. A free Microsoft account may be required for sign-in, but it does not remove the app’s purchase requirement.

iPhone and iPad

On iOS, Minecraft is normally purchased through the App Store. There is no reliable legal method to unlock the full iOS version with a cracked IPA, jailbreak package, or “free coins” tool. Those downloads can compromise your Apple ID or install unwanted software.

Is Minecraft free on PlayStation?

PS4

Minecraft is not generally free for a new PS4 player. The official trial may be available through PlayStation or the Minecraft trial page, but the complete game requires a license. In 2019, existing PS4 owners received the Bedrock version as a free update, which changed the edition they already owned rather than making Minecraft free for everyone. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/ps4-news?utm_source=openai))

PS5

Minecraft is not permanently free on PS5 unless you already own an eligible PS4 license or receive access through a current platform promotion. Players who own Minecraft for PS4 can claim the native PS5 version through the PlayStation Store using the same PlayStation Network account. If you do not own Minecraft on PlayStation, you normally need to purchase it. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/release-date--minecraft-for-playstation-5-?utm_source=openai))

Online console play can also require the platform’s online subscription. That subscription is separate from the Minecraft purchase, and a free Microsoft account does not replace it. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/realms/minecraft-and-microsoft-accounts?utm_source=openai))

What can you play for free?

Minecraft free trial

The trial lets you test the modern game before buying. Expect a limited play session, Survival-only gameplay, and no regular online multiplayer or Realms. The exact time and device support can vary, so treat the trial as a preview rather than a permanent free edition.

Minecraft Classic

Minecraft Classic is a historical browser version released as a nostalgia experience. It has only 32 blocks and represents the early 2009-style game, so it lacks the modern mobs, biomes, crafting systems, updates, and survival progression. It is free to play, but it is not the current Minecraft experience. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/embrace-past-minecraft-classic?utm_source=openai))

Free Realms trials

Realms is a separate subscription service for hosting an online world. Eligible first-time users can receive a 30-day Realms trial, but the trial is not the same as receiving Minecraft itself for free. Realms trials can also renew automatically unless canceled, so check the subscription terms before starting one. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/realms?utm_source=openai))

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The free-access rules are different because Java and Bedrock are distributed on different platforms:

EditionWhere it runsFree option
Java EditionWindows, Mac, and LinuxOfficial demo or trial on supported computers
Bedrock EditionWindows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS, and compatible Chromebook devicesPlatform-dependent trial or promotion
Minecraft ClassicWeb browserFree historical version with very limited features

Java Edition is the usual choice for Mac and Linux, while Bedrock is the version used for cross-play between consoles, mobile devices, Windows, and compatible Chromebook hardware. Buying Minecraft on one platform does not automatically make it free on every other platform. ([minecraft.net](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/about-minecraft?utm_source=openai))

Common mistakes when looking for free Minecraft

  • Confusing a Microsoft account with the game: the account is free, but the license is separate.
  • Assuming a trial is unlimited: trials end after a restricted amount of playtime.
  • Expecting console ownership to transfer everywhere: a PlayStation purchase does not unlock iOS, Android, Switch, or Mac.
  • Installing unofficial launchers: cracked files can steal accounts and corrupt worlds.
  • Calling Minecraft Classic the full game: Classic is an early browser version, not modern Survival or Creative gameplay.
  • Forgetting online subscription costs: console multiplayer may require PlayStation Plus, Xbox online access, or Nintendo Switch Online in addition to Minecraft.

If you only want to test the controls, use the official trial. If you want the current updates, unlimited worlds, multiplayer servers, and the complete Survival experience, you need a legitimate copy of the edition supported by your device.
