How Do You Get Flint in Minecraft? Every Fast Method

Mine gravel for flint, boost your odds with Fortune, or use villagers and chest loot.

How do you get flint in Minecraft? Mine gravel with any tool, then repeat until it drops flint instead of gravel. Each gravel block has a 10% chance to drop one flint. Fortune improves the odds, with Fortune III guaranteeing flint, while Silk Touch prevents flint from dropping.

How do you get flint in Minecraft?

Flint is not a craftable item in vanilla Minecraft. You get it mainly by breaking gravel. Gravel generates in many places, so you can usually collect enough flint near a river, ocean, cave, or windswept gravelly area.

When you break gravel, the game chooses between dropping the gravel block and dropping one piece of flint. The default flint chance is 10%, so you may need to mine several gravel blocks before finding one.

  • Primary method: Break gravel until flint drops.
  • Fastest upgrade: Use a shovel with Fortune III.
  • Alternative source: Trade with a novice fletcher villager.
  • Early-game shortcut: Search a village fletcher chest or a ruined portal chest.

Find gravel in the world

Gravel is the block you need to look for. It appears naturally in both the Overworld and the Nether, although Overworld locations are usually safer and easier to search early in a world.

  • Riverbeds and riverbanks
  • Shallow oceans and ocean floors
  • Stony shores
  • Windswept gravelly hills
  • Caves and underground patches
  • Nether terrain, where gravel can appear in large areas

A river is often the simplest place to start. Look for gray blocks underwater or along the bank, then collect a group of gravel blocks with a shovel. You do not need a specific type of shovel: wooden, stone, iron, diamond, and netherite shovels all work.

Mine gravel safely

  1. Craft or equip a shovel.
  2. Locate a gravel patch near a safe area.
  3. Break the gravel blocks one at a time.
  4. Pick up any flint that appears.
  5. Place the remaining gravel again if you want to keep mining the same supply.

Gravel is affected by gravity. If you dig beneath a large hanging patch, it can fall and suffocate you or bury dropped items. Mine from the side or remove the upper blocks carefully, especially in caves and ravines.

Increase the flint drop rate with Fortune

Fortune is the best way to get flint quickly from gravel. It increases the chance that gravel drops flint instead of the gravel block. Fortune works on a shovel, pickaxe, or another tool that can break gravel.

Tool enchantmentFlint chance from gravelResult
No Fortune10%Usually gravel, sometimes one flint
Fortune I14.29%Improved chance of one flint
Fortune II25%One flint every four gravel blocks on average
Fortune III100%Every gravel block drops one flint

For a large supply, use a Fortune III shovel and mine gravel normally. Every block becomes one flint, which makes Fortune III the fastest reliable method. Keep in mind that Fortune III does not preserve the gravel: the block drops flint instead.

Fortune or Silk Touch?

Fortune and Silk Touch serve opposite purposes when mining gravel. Fortune helps you obtain flint, while Silk Touch makes the gravel block drop as gravel every time. If you need both materials, carry two shovels or mine the gravel with Silk Touch first and process it later with Fortune.

  • Use Fortune III when you want flint.
  • Use Silk Touch when you want to store or transport gravel.
  • Use an unenchanted tool when you need a mixture of gravel and occasional flint.

Get flint without mining gravel

You cannot craft flint from cobblestone, stone, iron, or any other item in vanilla Minecraft. If you do not want to mine gravel, your practical options are village chest loot, ruined portal chests, and fletcher trading.

Search fletcher house chests

Some villages contain a fletcher house with a chest. These chests can contain one to three pieces of flint, making them a useful early-game source if you find a village before locating a gravel patch.

Check the village buildings for the fletcher's distinctive workstation, the fletching table. A chest inside that house may contain flint along with items such as sticks, feathers, arrows, and emeralds. Chest contents are random, so finding a fletcher house does not guarantee flint.

Search ruined portal chests

Ruined portals can also contain flint in their chests, usually in small quantities. This is a convenient bonus if you are already exploring for obsidian, gold, or a Nether entrance, but it is not as dependable as mining gravel.

Trade with a fletcher

A novice fletcher can offer a trade for 10 flint in exchange for 10 gravel and one emerald. The trade is not guaranteed to appear for every fletcher, so check the villager's first trades before investing time in a trading setup.

This method does not truly avoid gravel, because the trade requires gravel. However, it can convert a small amount of gravel into a larger flint supply once you have emeralds and a fletcher. It is especially useful when you already have a village, a gravel stockpile, and a steady emerald source.

How to get flint fast in Minecraft

The fastest method depends on your stage of progression. Early in the game, simply find a river or ocean and mine gravel with a shovel. Once you have access to enchanting, Fortune III turns the process into a guaranteed one-block-to-one-flint conversion.

Fast early-game method

  1. Craft a wooden or stone shovel.
  2. Travel to a river, ocean, or cave with visible gravel.
  3. Mine at least 10 gravel blocks.
  4. Collect the flint drops and return for more if necessary.

Mining 10 gravel blocks gives you a reasonable chance of getting at least one flint, but the result is random. Bring extra inventory space if you are collecting gravel for later use.

Fast enchanted method

  1. Obtain a shovel with Fortune III.
  2. Find or place a large supply of gravel.
  3. Mine each gravel block with the Fortune shovel.
  4. Collect one flint from every block.

For repeated flint gathering, place gravel in a straight line on solid ground and break it with Fortune III. This lets you process a large supply quickly without digging into unstable underground pockets.

What is flint used for?

Flint is mainly used to craft arrows and flint and steel. Arrows require flint, sticks, and feathers, so a skeleton farm or a large chicken supply may create a continuing demand for it.

  • Flint and steel: One flint and one iron ingot create the fire-starting tool used for Nether portals and ignition.
  • Arrows: One flint, one stick, and one feather create four arrows.
  • Fletcher trades: Flint can be traded with certain villagers for emeralds after the relevant trade is unlocked.

If you only need one flint for a Nether portal, do not spend time setting up a villager system. Mine gravel near water or underground until one drops. If you need stacks of arrows, Fortune III or a fletcher trading setup becomes much more valuable.

Java and Bedrock Edition differences

The basic way to obtain flint is the same in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition: break gravel and wait for the flint drop. Fortune increases the chance, Silk Touch prevents the flint drop, and Fortune III guarantees flint from gravel in both editions.

Chest contents and villager trade availability can vary slightly between editions or world versions, so gravel mining remains the most consistent method. You do not need a special command, add-on, or mod to obtain flint in either edition.

Common mistakes when collecting flint

  • Using Silk Touch: Silk Touch gives you gravel instead of flint.
  • Expecting a crafting recipe: Flint cannot be made directly from another material in vanilla Minecraft.
  • Letting gravel fall: Gravel that falls onto a non-solid block, such as a torch, does not produce flint.
  • Using Fortune III for gravel storage: Fortune III converts every mined gravel block into flint, so use Silk Touch when you need gravel.
  • Mining beneath suspended gravel: Falling gravel can trap or suffocate you.

For one or two pieces, mine a nearby gravel patch with any shovel. For a large supply, use Fortune III. If you have no gravel nearby, check fletcher house and ruined portal chests while exploring, then use a fletcher trade once your village setup is ready.
